Once again, thanks to DeLauer's newsstand in downtown Oakland

This blog would be impossible to write without a place I can reliably see all the supermarket rag headlines every week as soon as they are available to the public. For me, that place is DeLauer's newsstand on Broadway between 13th and 14th in downtown Oakland. Today, I noticed that Star was missing, and when I told the owner he got on the line to his distributor and told me I could come back in an hour.

For those of you who don't read this blog regularly, all I do is read the covers of the supermarket rags. If I want to find out more about the story, I also check the websites or the Internet to see if a story has been denied, as many often are. This means I don't actually buy $40 worth of magazines a week, and still DeLauer's gives me great service. I've taken to buying a soda or a snack when I go in just so I don't feel like a parasite.

If you are in the downtown area of Oakland, check out DeLauer's for all your magazine and periodical needs. This is small business at its finest.

I got the idea for this blog back in late December of last year, but then I didn't realize that not every supermarket was going to get copies of The Only Ten Magazines That Matter on a timely basis every week. This problem which I didn't know existed is solved by a store that I've known about since I was a kid, DeLauer's Newsstand in Downtown Oakland. They are very nice about me coming in each week and just reading the covers of the tabloids without buying them, so I usually try to buy something, a soda or a sudoku puzzle book or what not. If you are in the East Bay Area, please stop by DeLauer's, still at the same store front on Broadway between 13th and 14th now for 104 years. They have a great selection of magazines and newspapers from around the world, as well as novels and non-fiction in both hardcover and paperback.

This blog would be impossible without a place where I can get the headlines from all of The Only Ten Magazines That Matter, and that means I get on my bicycle every Thursday and visit DeLauer's News Stand in downtown Oakland. As you can see from the sign, the place has been a fixture on Broadway (between 13th and 14th Sts.) since 1907. It's currently owned by some very nice guys from Ethiopia, and even though I don't buy the magazines, I try to give them some patronage when I go in and treat their business like a browsing library.

DeLauer's is conveniently located near the 12th Street BART station and their selection of magazines and periodicals of all kinds is second to none.
