Breaking news: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony divorcing.

Publication: Huffington Post
Date: 15 July 2011

Trying to hide a story in the Friday news dump is not just for Washington D.C. anymore. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez have decided to end their seven year marriage. To recap some of the stories of the past year in the gossip rags, Marc Anthony was allegedly not happy about her taking the job on American False Idol and in January she had an interview with the standard crap line "My kids saved me."

Maybe they saved her a bundle on car insurance. They sure couldn't save this drama queen's marriage.

Breaking news: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver separate.

Publication: Associated Press (via the Huffington Thing)
Date: 9 May 2011

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have announced that they are separating.

Shit. I thought Kennedy girls put up with anything. Either she's grown some self-esteem or he is even a more miserable scumbag than I had previously imagined.

It could be both.

This is usually where I wish all concerned the best, but when Arnold became governor, I had work and then I didn't because he cut the community college budget.

I hope he contracts something slow and painful.

Breaking news:Courteney Cox and David Arquette have been separated for months

Publication: TMZ online
Date: 11 October 2010

TMZ reports that Courteney Cox and David Arquette have been officially separated for several months, and this has only recently been confirmed because Arquette has been seen out and about with a young woman he has been intimate with.

I'm only surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Leaving the Love Boat™:George Lopez and his wife Ann are divorcing

Publication: Huffington Post
Date: 28 September 2010

George Lopez and his wife of of 17 years Ann are getting a divorce. The most remarkable aspect of their marriage is that she gave him a kidney a few years back when he had a life threatening illness. This year, he made one appearance on the covers of the supermarket rags when the Enquirer stated he had sex with a hooker. So the tabloids did give us some warning, but they talk trash about a lot of people whose marriages don't break up as well.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Sean Penn and Robin Wright finalize their divorce

Publication: People on line
Date: 4 August 2010

In yet another example of the problems with the supermarket rag business model, Sean Penn and his wife Robin Wright have finalized their divorce at exactly the right time to screw with it being a cover story. Sean had one other story this year reported on this blog, but it was in the Associated Press and not the tabloids when he hit a photographer last February. This is the first mention of his wife all year.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Camille Grammer divorcing husband Kelsey

Publication: TMZ online
Date: 1 July 2010

Yet another celebrity couple divorces without a peep about their troubles in The Only Ten Magazines That Matter. Camille Grammer, age 41, a former Club MTV and Playboy model who will be on the next session of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, is filing for divorce from her conservative windbag husband Kelsey Grammer, age 55.

To be fair and balanced, Kelsey Grammer has done some very funny stuff. I love Sideshow Bob and so do all right thinking Americans. His work with Bebe Neuwirth on Cheers is A-Numba One Tip-Top. But when I've listened to him speak, he thinks his funny stuff is funny because of him and gives short shrift to the writers. He also whines about the bitter fate of being conservative in Hollywood, but he keeps getting work long past his deserved shelf life. Given these dreadful personality defects, I can honestly wish him every unhappiness.

Breaking news:Al and Tipper Gore separating after 40 years of marriage

Publication: Huffington Post
Date: 1 June 2010

The legitimate press is reporting that former vice-president Al Gore and his wife Tipper are separating. No affair is being mentioned.

There wasn't a peep in the tabloids, who have been more than happy to tell us about the unhappy marriages of the guys who have won the presidency over the past decade or so.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Larry King files for divorce

Publication: TMZ online
Date: 14 Apr. 2010

I'm already calling People magazine The Gold Standard, which is too bad, because I now realize there is something much, much better, but it's not a supermarket rag. The website TMZ is the most reliable source of gossip available because they actually put links to court documents.

We've had the word "divorce" thrown around a lot of times in the past few months, but divorce is a legal matter and a record of it has to be made public. Larry King is divorcing his wife Shawn. They were married since 1997, which means she was the first of his wives to last more than ten years. When they married, he was 66 and she was 34, so the Sophisticated French Rule (half your age plus seven) was broken.

I've seen people online complain about how sleazy TMZ is, but in truth the website is head and shoulders above any other source I've seen because they back their stuff up IN WRITING. Because of this unique approach, I am giving them the new nickname of The Paper Trail, and I recommend my readers take what they read on TMZ more seriously than other gossip sources, especially when they produce court documents.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy

Publication: Twitter
Date: 6 Apr. 2010

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy have announced the dissolution of their relationship. Both sent out tweets and their publicist confirmed the story to Entertainment Tonight.

Yes, this is what the world has come to. Double confirmation on Twitter trumps the Only Ten Magazines That Matter. It will be interesting to see if the announcement was made in time to screw the tabs, who have missed other stories that broke on Tuesdays this year.

The all-important three month review

This is not just a blog for tabloid headlines and snarky comments. The idea of the blog was to keep track of the tabloids, to report on what they got right and what they got wrong. I've had fun expanding the types of stories I will report, including enboobening alerts and hairdresser alerts, but the core of this blog's original mandate was to report the verifiable stuff and keep score. This is the first scorecard.

The tabloids have told us 22 people are dying or will die within some time frame. Brave Last Days or Sad Last Days are supposed to be just that, a warning that someone has a few weeks to live, maybe a few months at the outside. Then there are the reports that read "xxx dying!" or "yyy has so many months to live!" These are reports of lower urgency on the color coded list.

Brave Last Days reports: Elizabeth Taylor, Burt Reynolds, Loretta Lynn (twice), Gary Coleman, Charlie Daniels, Rue McClanahan, Barbara Billingsley, Dennis Hopper (twice), Dick Clark.

As of 7:00 pm Pacific time on 30 March 2010, all these people are still alive.

Not Long 4 This World reports: Camilla Parker-Bowles, Marie Osmond (suicidal), Bill Clinton, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Eminem, Paris Hilton, Kirsten Dunst, Queen Elizabeth II, Portia DeRossi.

As of 7:00 pm Pacific time on 30 March 2010, all these people are still alive.

Expiration Date reports: Rush Limbaugh, Kirstie Alley, Oprah Winfrey.

As of 7:00 pm Pacific time on 30 March 2010, all these people are still alive.

Here is a list of people at about the same level of fame that died in the past three months without any warning alert from the gutter press.

Corey Haim, Peter Graves, Fess Parker, Robert Culp, Merlin Olsen.

For the record: 23 warnings, 0 deaths so far. 5 deaths without warnings of people at about the same level of fame.

The tabloids told us about many break-ups. The truly verifiable are the reports of divorce. Rich people can "come to an understanding", but if one of them actually wants to get married again, then they have to divorce and that has to be public. Here are the couples we have been told will divorce in the tabloids.

On the rocks, but no divorce proceedings yet: Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods, Laura and George W. Bush, Charles and Camilla, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Michelle and Barack Obama, Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, Paula Deen and her husband, Phil McGraw and his wife, Larry and Shawn King.

Reports in the tabloids and some legal action has been taken: Benny Hinn and his wife, Paul and Anna Anka, John and Elizabeth Edwards (legally separated). There is a report of divorce proceedings by Sandra Bullock against Jesse James on Radar online, but no verification in a non-gossip source.

There are also the divorces and separations that took place but did not get reported in the tabloids first.

Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet, Jenny and Mark Sanford, Dennis and Victoria Hopper, Karl and Darcy Rove, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

That's three hits, ten swings and misses, four called strikes and one foul tip.

Here's another verifiable event. The end of the world.

Let me go on record here for anyone unclear on the concept. Nostradamus? Edgar Cayce? Dr. Harold Camping? You Friggin' Mayans? I gotcher end of the world RIGHT HERE!

Of course, we are talking about the future and no one truly knows the future. The end of the world could come to pass as one of these wankers predicted, and boy, will my face be red!

Actually, it could be charred beyond recognition or crushed under tons of debris, but you get the idea.

So far, we have not reached any of the dates yet predicted for the coming end times, though a few of them will come before the next review in late June and the beginning of the End Times is slated for September 11, 2010, an easy date to remember.

========

Positive and negative tabloids: Not all tabloids are created equal. Some are going for sensationalistic stories that slam celebrities. Some suck up to the celebrities and promise to tell their side of the stories.

Jackal of the Press award: In nearly a flat-footed tie, the National Enquirer is the most negative tabloid with only 10% positive stories, followed by the National Examiner at 11% positive.

Biggest Suck Up award: OK! magazine is by far the most positive tab, with 64% of stories putting celebrities in a positive light. The nearest competitors, the Sun, People and Weekly Life and Style are in the 42% to 44% positive range. The Sun hardly counts, because it has less stories about celebrities than any other tab. One story about the canonization of Elvis, Princess Di and Michael Jackson can skew the entire data set.

Let me end this first review with the story that surprised me the most. The tabloids are available at my local newsstand and around the country on Thursdays, so I arrange the stories to dole them out in even dosages throughout the week, from about three to maybe six a day in a very busy week. In late February, I decided a story entitled "Paula Deen's divorce shocker!" was one of the least important stories of the week, so I didn't get around to it until Wednesday, the final day of the tabloid week.

This story is still the most popular page on my blog. About 20% of all my traffic to this website has been to this page since it was first put up.

Shows how much I know. And by the way, the headline was your usual overblown tabloid teaser headline and Ms. Deen's marriage is not in any real jeopardy at this time.

More slanderous stories tomorrow and fresh trash on Thursday, because that's how we roll at It's News 2 Them™.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet divorcing

Publication: Associated Press
Date: 15 March 2010

There have been a lot of celebrity couples breaking up recently that have not been reported in the tabloids, most of them unmarried, but this is the one with the most celebrity and an actual divorce. Director Sam Mendes and actress Kate Winslett (sigh!) are going their separate ways. Sources say it is amicable. That may be why the tabloids don't care.

I certainly consider this couple closer to British royalty than those ugly, useless prats who live in Buckingham Palace.

Leaving the Love Boat™:Jenny Sanford granted a divorce from Gov. Mark Sanford

Publication: McClatchy Newspaper (The State, South Carolina)
Date: 26 Feb. 2010

As should come as a surprise to no one, Jenny Sanford has been granted a divorce on the grounds that her husband was unfaithful.

You know, her husband the governor who couldn't stop FREAKING BLABBING ABOUT THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE IN ARGENTINA!

The National Enquirer is being talked up for a Pulitzer for the work done exposing John Edwards' sordid life, but all ten of the tabs were completely shut out of this ridiculous example of true love spoiled by two inconvenient prior commitments.

Because of the adultery, the divorce won't be final for about two weeks, but it's just a formality.

Leaving The Love Boat™:Madonna and Jesus Luz

Publication: Chicago Sun-Times
Date: 4 Feb. 2010

The tabs missed it, but it is being reported that the 51 year old Madonna and her 23 year old Brazilian boyfriend Jesus Luz are going their separate ways. It turns out that besides Kabbalah, they don't have that much in common.

So nu?

Besides being 28 years older than Jesus, Madge is 14 years older than Jesus' mom.

Do the math. Or don't. It's icky.

Leaving The Love Boat™: Dennis And Victoria Hopper

Publication: Huffington Post
Date: 15 Jan. 2010

Okay, last week Dennis Hopper was dying and this week he is divorcing his wife of 14 years Victoria, the mother of his six year old child. The HuffPo story confirms he is very sick, but well enough to start divorce proceedings, which means his Brave Last Days will instead be his Messy and Sordid Last Days.

I am not making this a You So Crazy Alert™ for Dennis Hopper, but it was a close call.

Leaving the Love Boat™: Karl and Darby Rove

Source: Associated Press

Just in case you think it's only liberal Hollywood types who have no respect for the sacred oaths of marriage, Karl and Darby Rove are getting divorced after 24 years of marriage. Once again, this is being reported by legitimate news sources before the tabloids could get their hooks into it.

What's this world coming to?

Leaving the Love Boat™: Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

Source: Huffington Post

Yet another celebrity break-up gets reported in the legitimate press before the tabs can alert us! How do these people cash their paychecks with a clear conscience?

Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are dissolving their union of more than twenty years, as is being reported by real news sources. Rumors are that Susan has herself a new young honey, and again these salacious tidbits are not being reported by the supermarket tabloids first.

Yet another black mark against the jackals of the press.

Leaving the Love Boat™: Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller

Here's another service we will be providing at It's News 2 Them™: reports on divorces and nasty break-ups that somehow escaped the notice of the tabloids. Since the marital difficulties of Charlie Sheen and his new bride Brooke Mueller include police reports, this is exactly the kind of story the tabloids should have alerted us to in advance, but the jackals of the press missed this one. It goes into the new category Leaving the Love Boat™. Each entry in this category counts as a black mark against the tabloids. Today there will be three such marks.
