The Globe bids farewell to the stars we lost in 2010.

Publication: Globe
Date: 3 January 2010

The Globe often has a story in contention for Meanest Story of the Week, but not this time around. They take up most of the cover in tribute to people who died this year, and all they have is pictures with no teaser headlines about tragic secrets or the like. The list includes several people whose deaths wer not mentioned in the Globe before this issue. In no particular order, the names are:
  • Tony Curtis
  • Dennis Hopper
  • John Forsythe
  • Rue McLanahan
  • Elizabeth Edwards
  • Barbara Billingsley
  • Leslie Nielsen
  • Gary Coleman

And the only person on the list who I will print a picture of here, not out of any disrespect for the others but out of special respect for her. 'Cos she's purdy.
  • Miss Lena Horne
Best wishes to the family and friends of all the people on this list, from a fan.

Late to the Party alert:Dennis Hopper's estranged wife banned from deathbed

Publication: Globe
Date: 14 June 2010

The only story that made the reports of Dennis Hopper's serious health problems suspect was the fact he was taking the trouble to divorce his wife. Divorces can drag out for a year or more easily, so why was a guy with six months to live even starting the proceedings?

The Globe reports that Victoria Hopper was banned from his deathbed. Other news stories reported when Hopper was alive made it look like the real struggle was between Hopper's daughter and the wicked stepmom.

Once again, best wishes to Mr. Hopper's friends and his non-estranged family, from a fan.

Breaking news:Dennis Hopper dead at 74

Publication: Associated Press
Date: 29 May 2010

In two days, the number of correct predictions for the year jumps from zero to two for the tabloids foretelling the deaths of celebrities as Dennis Hopper dies from complications of prostate cancer. He was 74.

The Enquirer first had Hopper's health problems on their website in January and the Examiner put him on the front page that same month. His health problems were also covered in the legitimate press as well.

Best wishes to all Mr. Hopper's friends and to most of his family, from a fan.

Brave Last Days Alert: 100 lb. Dennis Hopper collapses - UPDATE

Publication: National Enquirer
Date: 12 Apr. 2010

Dennis Hopper's health problems are very real, but The Flagship adds some details this week that are hard to believe. They have pictures of him collapsing and they say he now weighs 100 pounds. According to different websites, he's either 5'9" or 5'7". I stood in line with him at the Skywalker Ranch cafeteria about twenty years ago, and I remember that he isn't a big guy, but neither was he tiny. Even if we go with him being 5'7", I don't know how a man could survive at that height weighing 100 pounds.

Best wishes to Mr. Hopper and his family. Of all the people on the Brave Last Days watch list, I fear Dennis is the one who actually is not long for this world.

UPDATE: Dennis Hopper died on May 29, 2010.

On the rocks update:Dennis Hopper gets a restraining order on his wife

Publication: Associated Press
Date: 11 Feb. 2010

In actual news verifiable by court records, Dennis Hopper is moving forward with his divorce of his wife Victoria and a restraining order from a judge requires Ms. Hopper to stay at least ten feet away from her husband.

So what's he going to get her for Valentine's Day, an ankle bracelet?

Fussin' and Feudin' Alert™:War breaks out in Dennis Hopper's family.

Publication: Globe
Date: 15 Feb. 2010

This week in the tabloids starts with a bang, and I promise there's plenty of fireworks to come. Reputable publications have already said that the Dennis Hopper divorce is really a squabble between his wife Victoria and an adult daughter from a previous marriage. But reputable publications didn't tell you this brouhaha involves guns, drugs and murder threats, did they?

This gives you an idea of the drama level you can expect this week on the covers of the Only Ten Magazines That Matter™.

Stay tuned. I'm not kidding.

Brave Last Days Alert: Rue McClanahan, Dick Clark, Dennis Hopper, Barbara Billingsley - UPDATED

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 8 Feb. 2010

For the first time this year, a supermarket tabloid has put a Brave Last Days story on the front page, mentioning four celebrities by name. Technically, it's a Sad Last Days alert, but I won't split hairs. All the names have appeared before on the covers or on the tabloid websites regarding health problems, one is new to this blog.

There have been stories of health problems for Rue McClanahan, but none of them said she was near death before. As always, this blog wishes nothing but the best for anyone mentioned in one of these posts.

UPDATE: Rue McClanahan died on June 3, 2010.

Dick Clark is also mentioned.

Likewise Dennis Hopper. It's odd to me how this counterculture character gets mentioned along with folks from much more mainstream entertainment.

UPDATE: Dennis Hopper died on May 29, 2010.

And last but not least, Barbara Billingsley gets her picture on the cover.

UPDATE: Barbara Billingsley died on October 16, 2010.

Leaving The Love Boat™: Dennis And Victoria Hopper

Publication: Huffington Post
Date: 15 Jan. 2010

Okay, last week Dennis Hopper was dying and this week he is divorcing his wife of 14 years Victoria, the mother of his six year old child. The HuffPo story confirms he is very sick, but well enough to start divorce proceedings, which means his Brave Last Days will instead be his Messy and Sordid Last Days.

I am not making this a You So Crazy Alert™ for Dennis Hopper, but it was a close call.

Brave Last Days Alert: Dennis Hopper

Publication: National Enquirer
Date: 18 Jan. 2010

Here's adding insult to injury. Dennis Hopper, already publicly admitting his prostate diagnosis, is now close to death, according to The Flagship, and he's told friends he's ready for the end.

And the Enquirer isn't even putting it on the front page! It's on the website! I wouldn't have seen it except that my friend Amelia took me up on my request to have people e-mail me when they see something. Thanks for the heads up, hon, and Go Knicks!

Sorry, Dennis, but your face on the cover just doesn't grab the eyeballs like Miss Loretta Lynn or a bunch of people who the Enquirer can insinuate are gay.

I know some of these Brave Last Days Alerts are going to come true, but I wish Mr. Hopper all the best. He's done a lot of great work in his career, but I have a special soft spot for Cool Hand Luke, one of the great trivia movies of all time when it comes to the depth of the cast.

UPDATE: Dennis Hopper died on May 29, 2010.
