Secrets of our soccer heroes

Publication: Globe
Date: 12 July 2010

Fresh trash delivered tomorrow! The last of this week's trash... right now!

The supermarket rags leave team sports alone for the most part. I'm guessing they must think that the stories are only interesting to the fans of a particular team and don't have a national appeal. So two time Super Bowl winning QB Ben Roethlisberger's bad behavior got a total of zero stories in the tabloids and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor's arrest was only of interest due to his connection with Dancing With The Stars. Tiger Woods doesn't play a team sport, so he doesn't have "hometown fans" and he has lots and lots of endorsements, so they jumped on his story, assuming correctly that he is a national celebrity. New York Yankees star Alex Rodriquez' divorce and tomcatting ways have barely registered a blip over the past few years in the tabloids.

The Globe made a too late attempt to capitalize on whatever World Cup fever might still exist in the States with a headline about the secrets of our World Cup heroes, featuring a picture of cute little Landon Donovan.

For what it's worth, the Globe is also the publication that has tried to push stories about NASCAR the hardest, followed by their weak sister the Examiner.

Also for what it's worth, I like soccer and I'm still not plunking down money to buy this issue.
