6 month review:The most popular tabloid celebrities

Here are the top ten celebrities in terms of cover stories in the first half of 2010.

1. Sandra Bullock: Until mid March, the tabloids almost completely ignored Sandra Bullock, but In Touch broke the story about Jesse James being a man slut, and that triggered a flurry of stories. In late April, Sandy found a way to turn the stories positive by introducing the world to her adorable adopted son Louis Bardo Bullock and confirming that she and Jesse were getting divorced.

2. BrAngelina: If I split up the headlines into Brad Pitt stories and Angelina Jolie stories, Angie would be the number one celebrity so far this year and Brad would be tied for second with Sandra Bullock. Instead, if both are mentioned, I count it as a BrAngelina story, and even though they scared the American rags away for a few months by suing a British rag, they are still in second place with number of mentions.

3. Jennifer Aniston: Many of the early mentions of Jen this year were about her being a cause of friction in the Pitt-Jolie household, but she also got a lot of cover stories either about her inability to keep a man or about how damn hot she is for a 41 year old.

4. Jesse James: Jesse became the go-to man slut for the tabloids after the middle of March, breezing past the top man slut for beginning of the year, Tiger Woods.

5. Kim Kardashian
6. Kourtney Kardashian
7. Kendra Wilkinson

I don't follow reality TV at all, and some weeks it seems like that's all the tabloids want to talk about. I don't know if the tabs will keep up their obsession with these three women in the second half of the year.

8. Tiger Woods. Now that the divorce is finalized, there is a good chance that this story will lose steam. I would not be surprised if Tiger is not in the top ten in the golf rankings or the top ten of tabloid covers by the end of the year.

9. Kate Gosselin. Kate, on the other hand, is like catnip to the tabs. They have found someone the public really dislikes, and they will continue to criticize her for every public mistake. Her ex-husband Jon, on the other hand, has become an unperson in the eyes of The Only Ten Magazine That Matter. In general, the tabloids prefer women to men as cover story material.

10. Elin Nordegren. Like Tiger but even more so, I expect Elin to be out of the tabloid spotlight now that the divorce is final.

Best bets to break into the top 10 for the whole year: Of all the people in the Top Ten at the year's halfway mark, only the top three are locks to be in the year end Top Ten. Of course, actual events can change the whole game, but looking at recent trends, here are some names that have a strong chance to eclipse the names currently ranked high.

Oprah Winfrey
Angelina Jolie as a solo
Prince William
Kate Middleton
Heidi Montag

There will be another series of updates of this type at the end of September.
